Yosif Levinson - the compiler and the author of the texts of this book - was born in 1917. He grew up in a small town of Veisiejai in Dzükija (southern Lithuania), and received a degree in engineering from the technical Department of Vytautas Magnus University in Kaunas. Yosif Levinson fought the Nazis as a serviceman of the 16 th Lithuanian Division during World War II.

In 1941, during the mass massacre of the Jews his father and relatives were murdered in the Katkiskes village near Lazdijai.

Mr. Levinson is a member of Lithuanian Jewish Community Board, the chairman of the Commission for maintenance of the Jewish cemeteries and the sites of massacre; a research fellow of the State Jewish Museum. It was on his initiative that the Lithuanian Jewish Cultural Society (later reorganized into the Lithuanian Jewish Community) and the State Jewish Museum presented the Lithuanian Supreme Council with a draft resolution on renovating of the Jewish cemeteries and sites of their massacre in the Nazi occupied Lithuania. The resolution was passed at the end of 1990.

Mr. Levinson devoted many years in organizing and supervising the restoration and maintenance of the Jewish mass graves and cemeteries.
